Cupid’s Pick: Valentine’s Day Gifts Worthy of Your Heart

Erin Hagen

Finding the perfect gift for the special someone in your life is essential on Valentine’s Day. So much time is spent, especially in new relationships, trying to read people’s minds and learn about their interests. It’s nice to have a gift guide to spark ideas and take the guesswork out of it! I’ve spent time scouring the Lansing retail community to find an array of businesses that go out of their way to provide quality homemade products.

Fabiano’s sweets, a family business, has been a leading producer of high quality candies since 1935. In February, they offer a wide variety of beautiful boxes in all shapes, sizes and colors filled with handcrafted chocolates and candies of your choice. Prices range from $16 to $66, depending on how many candies you want for your sweetheart. I love the experience of going to the store on Michigan Avenue to smell everything and pick it out myself. If you prefer to shop from home, Fabiano’s offers online shopping. No matter what you choose, your darling is bound to be impressed.

Great Lakes Ace Hardware in Frandor is the ideal stopover for the do-it-yourselfer in your life. It is a Michigan-based company that has been in the hardware business for ages. Its expert buyers have put together a creative collection of grills and coolers, plus all the accessories that go with them. Ace’s in-store selection is great, but the online inventory is vast. Online has everything for any season! All products for a tailgate party or backyard barbecue in one place. It’s also a great place to shop for outdoor enthusiasts.

If jewelry is the way to your darling’s heart, then stop at Doctor of jewelry in Frandor is a must. Not only he make custom pieces and work with you on the design, but he also has an extensive collection of estate jewelry. It has a wide range of competitive prices and a collection that is sure to please. Jewelry Doctor will work with you to create a very special piece of jewelry for the love of your life.

A ready-made idea for the special beer drinker in your life is a craft beer club of the month. It will take a bit more work from the giver, but your first step would be to visit Ellison Brewery + Spirits to East Lansing and select the amount you would like the recipient to receive each month. This is the definition of the gift that keeps on giving. Ellison offers many craft beer selections. I happen to love the tiramisu cafe stout. Ellison also offers vodka, gin, and rum, so whatever your tastes, it’s a great way to put some creativity into supporting a local business!

Two of my favorite stores in East Lansing are mad eagle and smart clover, which are owned by the same amazing people. If you can’t find this unique item in one store, go to another! Clever Clover is a fantastic mix of women’s clothing, jewelry, homeware and plants. Mad Eagle has more sterling silver jewelry, bags and stationery. Both stores are cleverly organized and designed making it an experience in itself. Clever Clover has beautiful candles and air plants that bring comfort to any home or office.

For a unique shopping experience, head to West Lansing’s Horrocks Farm Market. If you’re like me, your whole family is your Valentine, and Horrocks has something for everyone to love. Even on Valentine’s Day, you can treat your loved ones to the Ice Bar, where they frequently host live music and an assortment of tasty drinks. Check out their fresh flowers, and some can be pre-ordered to meet your exact needs. Horrock’s also offers sweet treats, like popcorn and macaroons. Without forgetting a wide selection of coffees, sweets and dishes already prepared to spend a nice evening without worrying about cooking. I haven’t even mentioned the nursery and all the gardening gifts that would delight any gardener in your life. I could go on and on, but it’s best that you see for yourself if you haven’t already. There is something new to see every time I go.

You can always head to REO Town and stop at one of the many little shops there, but the REO City Market seems like a rotating market full of different goodies. It is compared to an indoor farmer’s market. Different vendors and artists can sell their wares in a large open place. When shopping in the market, it’s a good idea to have an open mind about what you’re looking for – you can’t have just one item in mind. If you’re the type to go with the flow and look around and pick up on what speaks to you, then this is your type of place.

A great way to surprise your loves is to start their Valentine’s Day with a special delivery of Child Bakery Flour at the Grand Rim. You would have your pick from a range of tasty treats, starting with homemade bagels and delicious pastries and donuts. Not only are they delicious, but they are beautiful and would make a big impression on anyone who was to receive them. Or, you can buy the treats to take away to enjoy later. It is also an elegant presentation if you gather with friends on Valentine’s Day.

Valentine’s Day, to me, is always a good reminder of the people who make this journey in life so much better. These relationships may be the ones we most often forget to recognize. Whether your Valentine is your mother or the love of your life, it’s always good to pause to acknowledge those relationships and spoil that person. Happy Valentine’s Day everyone!
